Installing a safety light
Remove the old luminaire
Turn off the circuit of the luminaire at the main control box.
Remove the luminaire mounting screws with a drill/driver and remove the luminaire.
Loosen the wire nuts on the ends of the exposed wires and use a circuit tester to check that the power is off. Disconnect the wires from the fixture.
The wires coming from the junction box in the wall may be connected to other wires. If this is the case, leave these wires connected – outdoor lights are often wired in a series, so they can all be turned on with one switch. Connect the wires from the new light to these inner wires in the same way as the old model.
Reconnect the wires
On flat outdoor surfaces, install the neoprene gasket behind the fixture to prevent water from entering the back of the fixture. This fixture is designed for use in wet environments, so the gasket is not needed. Although most outdoor lights are waterproof, make sure the model you choose is suitable for damp locations.
Remove about 1.5 cm of insulation from the ends of the new lighting wires and twist them together with the wires coming from the wall junction box. Secure each splice with wire nuts.
Install the new luminaire
Position the light fixture over the junction box. Some fixtures mount directly to the receptacle, others to the wall. Tighten the screws with a drill/screwdriver. Be sure to keep all wires in the receptacle and do not over tighten the screws.
Programming the device
Open the cover of the unit to change the light settings. Most units have high, medium, and low sensitivity settings. The time setting, which determines how long the light stays on when activated, usually ranges from a few seconds to several minutes.
